CHESAPEAKE HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Proving that older, existing homes can be upgraded rather easily to become more green and energy-efficient, Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity, under the supervision of CARB/SWA rehabilitated five row houses in Baltimore, Maryland.
To improve energy efficiency, they incorporated the following:
- Increased the thermal resistance of the building envelope
- Properly sized/compact/high-efficiency HVAC system
- Tankless water heater
- Energy Star® appliances
- Replaced incandescent lights with compact fluorescent lighting
Some of the green features employed were:
- Low VOC paints, caulks and adhesives
- Durable fiber-cement board siding
- Low-flow faucets& dual flush toilets
- Bamboo flooring
